Is your website accessible yet?

From June 2025, digital accessibility will no longer be optional but mandatory. New legislation requires all business websites and mobile apps to be accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. But what does this mean exactly? And how do you ensure your website complies?

What does digital accessibility mean?

Digital accessibility means that your website or app is usable for everyone, regardless of physical, visual, auditory, or cognitive limitations. Think of:

Text alternatives: Describe images with alt texts so screen readers can interpret them.

Contrast and readability: Ensure sufficient contrast between text and background and use a clear font.

Navigation: Make your website easy to operate with keyboard navigation and logically structured menus.

Why is this important?

Legal obligation: From June 2025, companies can be held accountable for inaccessible digital services. This also applies to smaller businesses.

Larger audience: Accessibility makes your website usable for millions of people with disabilities, but also for elderly people or people with temporary limitations (such as a broken arm).

Better SEO: Accessible websites often rank better in search engines due to clear structure and alternative texts.

How do you make your website accessible?

1. Start with an audit: Have your website tested for accessibility according to the WCAG guidelines (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines).

2. Work with experts: Engage a web developer or UX designer with experience in accessible design.

3. Test with real users: Ask people with different disabilities to test your website. This provides valuable insights.

4. Keep improving: Accessibility is a continuous process. Regularly check whether your website still meets the requirements.

Don't wait too long!

With June 2025 in sight, now is the time to get started. An accessible website is not only a legal obligation but also an opportunity to promote inclusivity and expand your customer base.
